Beginning Woodcarving - Beyond the Basics

Designed for students with some woodcarving experience, but still consider themselves a beginner, this class builds on foundational skills while introducing new techniques and projects. Students will learn to carve objects such as songbirds and gnomes while developing their skills in safe carving practices, knife sharpening, and selecting appropriate wood and subjects. In this supportive learning environment, students will gain confidence, refine their techniques, and expand their woodcarving abilities.

Participants are required to provide their own cut-resistant glove and carving knife. Recommended products will be included in the course confirmation email. The instructor will have a limited number of tools available for use during the first class session only.

A $5 materials fee (cash only) is due to the instructor at the start of the first class. Additional materials will be available for purchase at a low cost for use in subsequent sessions.

Age requirement: 18+

If class is full, please enroll to be added to the waitlist. We will contact you if a space becomes available.

John Hein began wood carving song and shore birds, both in full and tree ornament size, in 1984. Since moving to Minnesota his carvings have expanded to include Gnomes and Santas. He blends the influence of Scandinavian, Germany and Minnesotan artcraft to create unique Christmas ornaments. He lives in St Louis Park and carves full-time at John Hein Woodcarver.
