Later In Life ADHD/Autism Diagnosis - Why Now?
You've probably noticed the increase in social media accounts relating to neurodivergence and may even know people who have recently been diagnosed with ADHD or Autism as an adult. But how could this have been missed in childhood? And what good does it do to get diagnosed now? In this one part informational session, Erin Shobe, a mental health practitioner and coach, will share her personal and professional experience with later in life neurodivergent diagnosis. Learn about neurodivergent presentation styles that don't fit the "stereotyped" idea of what these diagnosis are and gain an understanding into how socialization and masking contribute to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, especially among women (or those socialized as female), gifted/NEUROCOMPLEX, trans, and BIPOC individuals. This session will explore the benefits of seeking out a diagnosis (clinical or self-diagnosis) in adulthood and provide resources for further exploration.

Hi, I'm Erin Shobe. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Minnesota and Colorado. I have a Master's Degree in Professional Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University. I am an Approved Supervisor by the MN Board of Marriage and Family Therapy and have extensive experience in Play Therapy and Play Therapy Supervision, and am also a Registered Play Therapist and a Certified PREPARE/ENRICH Counselor. I am certified to use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). In addition to therapy, I offer ADHD and Autism Assessments and Giftedness Profiling for adults and am a Neurocomplexity Coach. My clients have many different kinds of diagnosis’ (or none at all). I am often a good fit for empaths, neurocomplex, and highly sensitive & creative types who are hoping to address complex PTSD/developmental trauma. I coach late in life diagnosed (self diagnosed or clinically diagnosed) neurocomplex* adults in self exploration, burnout recovery, and developing systems and routines to create a thriving life in a world that is set up for "neurotypicals." Nuerocomplexity is a term coined by Lindsey Mackereth representing a holistic, non-pathologizing framework that views neurodivergence (like autism, ADHD, and giftedness) as a uniquely complex, interconnected system rather than isolated labels. It focuses on how brains and bodies process the world in intense, nonlinear ways, highlighting that neurodivergent experiences often multiply in complexity.
