Intro. to Fly Fishing and Beginner Fly Casting
Interested in learning about fly fishing, fly casting and benefiting from the mental health attributes the sport offers? Join instructor Tom Kalgren for a fun introduction to fly fishing with basic beginner information including the fundamentals of casting a fly rod.
In this class you’ll learn basic fly rod, reel & line information and the principles behind equipment sizing, line design, how to set up your rod and the necessary steps for effective casting. We’ll cover the grip, how to use the line hand, how to pick up slack, wrist and arm control and a proper laydown. Four different casts will be taught, and you will leave with a good understanding of fly fishing basics and the ability to throw a beautiful fly line.
Minimum age 12. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a paid caregiver.

Tom has been fly fishing for over 20 years, mainly in the southeast MN driftless region, western United States and most recently saltwater fly fishing in Florida. He’s been teaching beginner fly casting at various events with Trout Unlimited, Cabela’s and individual clients for over 10 years. Recently he joined the Marlo+Lola Fly Fishing School as an instructor. He’s passionate about introducing folks to the great sport of fly fishing and loves working with beginners.
