Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD): Misdiagnosed and Misunderstood

This 45-minute educational presentation, developed in partnership with the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), provides an overview of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD)—a leading cause of dementia in adults under 60 that is frequently misdiagnosed. Participants will learn how FTD differs from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, including its major subtypes: behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and associated movement disorders such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS). The course covers common symptoms, genetic factors and the role of genetic counseling, the diagnostic process, and current treatment and symptom-management approaches. The presentation also highlights the significant emotional and financial impact of FTD on families and introduces AFTD resources—including the HelpLine, support groups, Comstock Grants, and FTD Disorders Registry. Learners will leave better prepared to recognize FTD, support individuals and families affected by the disease, and connect them with appropriate resources.

This course is presented by Jessica Epple, RN | Owner, Visiting Angels West Metro.

At Visiting Angels St Louis Park, we take pride in serving seniors throughout the Minneapolis area including Edina, Golden Valley, Richfield, Brooklyn Park, and surrounding communities. While Visiting Angels is a nationally recognized name in the senior home care industry, our local office is independently and family owned and operated, which allows us to focus on the unique needs of seniors right here in Hennepin County.

Since we opened our doors over 20 years ago, our team's mission has remained the same: help seniors remain safe, comfortable, and independent at home while giving their family members confidence and peace of mind. Whether your loved one has lived in the area for decades or has recently moved closer to family, our team is here to support them (and you) with compassionate, reliable in-home senior care.
